Techniques Used to Grab My Attention
Contrast
This movie constantly switches from the point of view of the richer passengers to the point of view of the less fortunate passengers, showing their completely opposite lifestyles and personalities. This attracts attention because the viewer is not being forced to focus on one specific character for 3 hours while a ship sinks, they need to stay interested by watching what happens on the other side of the ship for contrast.
The Usual
This movie also has the usual romance, violence, and drama that many people enjoy watching because these are not things that happen in our daily lives.
Camera Work and Points of View
This movie also uses different views of each scene. Sometimes the viewer will be looking at exactly what the character would be seeing, as if we're watching the action in their eyes. Sometimes a character will look at the camera, like they are talking to the viewer. Most of the time, the viewer is just watching what is going on from no particular person's point of view.
Editing
Creative video editing is used to transition between scenes. For example, there is one scene that uses morphing to transition between seeing the eyes of a younger woman to an old woman. In the third class party, the music begins before the viewer even knows what they're looking at. This will make the viewer want to keep watching to see what is going on.
Celebrities
This movie stars many A-list celebrities, so modern day young people might be interested in watching this movie because it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. This movie is also directed and written by a world-famous director, James Cameron. So even if this isn't a particularly "modern" movie, people now might be interested in watching it because modern day celebrities are in it.
Historical Fiction and Emotional Accuracy
The real Titanic caught the interest of people around the world because it was so big and luxurious for that time period and it ended so tradgically. This movie gives viewers a way of learning about the disaster without actually having to do research and people can enjoy learning about it as they watch this movie, which is the main idea of historical fiction stories. Most of the people in 1912 couldn't even imagine what it was like for those people aboard the ship, or how it really felt to lose someone in that disaster. This movie really captures the emotion of these people and characters, especially Rose, and the movie really convinces the audience to feel her pain. This forces the audience to be engrossed in the movie, which would result with them wanting to see it again.
